Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke
1819-1892
German physiologist who helped introduce new experimental methods into medical research. He was an early advocate of animal experimentation and the integration of chemistry and physics into biological research. Brücke's research included studies of skeletal muscle structure, vision, and the mechanism of speech. He was also very interested in art and wrote of the relationship of the physiology of vision to painting.
